Masturbating teacher has registration cancelled

A former Auckland Grammar teacher convicted of an indecent act in his empty classroom has now had his teaching registration cancelled.

Simon Toon was sentenced to 80 hours community work earlier this year for committing an indecent act in a public place after he was seen masturbating through a classroom window by a student.

At the time, he admitted accessing pornography on his school computer during a lunch break more than two years ago but argued the empty classroom was not a public place.

In its decision, the Teachers Disciplinary Tribunal revealed Toon had previously come to their attention 15 years ago in relation to allegations from a different school that he downloaded pornography there.

But at the time his certificate was renewed because the behaviour was three years earlier and he had an outstanding reference from his then employer.

When Auckland Grammar School became aware of the incident, Toon was suspended immediately, but later resigned part way through a disciplinary process in July 2013.
