Police have launched a homicide investigation after a 35-year-old man died after being attacked in Kaitaia last night.

An ambulance was called after a member of the public found the badly injured man on the side of Bonnett Road in Kaitaia about 11pm last night.

The man was placed on life support in Whangarei Hospital's Intensive Care Unit but died this afternoon.

People were in the Bonnett Road area attending a function when one person flagged down a patrol car and alerted police to the badly injured man.

The attack appeared to be unprovoked, Detective Inspector Kevin Burke said.

Police planned to complete a scene examination today and a post mortem will be undertaken to determine the cause of death.
