Police say a 16-year-old girl who was hanging out of a moving car was injured after the drink driver lost control and crashed through a fence in Upper Hutt.

The girl was sitting on the edge of the driver's window with half of her body outside the car, while travelling along Plateau Road last month, police said.

The 19-year-old driver then lost control, rolling the vehicle and crashing through a fence. The girl suffered serious injuries as the car rolled on top of her, but is now recovering at home.

The driver has been arrested and charged with driving under the influence.

The police said his blood alcohol level was 153 mgs of alcohol per 100 mls of blood.

He is to appear in the Hutt Valley District Court on 19 January.
