Drunk driver had three young kids in car

A drunk driver who was three times over the legal alcohol limit had three pre-school children in the car - two unrestrained - when she was pulled over by Auckland police.

Police said they were "stunned" by the female driver's actions.

Officers noticed a car cross the centre line on Tamaki Drive and pulled it over shortly after 10pm last night.

The driver - who also had two intoxicated adults in the car - blew 856mcg of alcohol per litre of breath. The only restrained passenger was an 18-month-old child.

Police said there was no telling how the journey might have ended for the driver, her passengers or others on the road if they had not intervened.

The woman has been charged with drink driving and the case has been referred to Child Youth and Family. Police said it was possible further charges will be laid.

Auckland City Road Policing Manager Inspector Andy King said staff were shocked by the case.

"It beggars belief that parents could choose to put such precious cargo as their own children in such vulnerable situations."

One of the intoxicated passengers was also arrested for obstruction and Mr King said police spent "considerable time" organising appropriate transport for the children to be safely delivered home.
