[b Four people with connections to the Mongrel Mob have been arrested in relation to the killing of Lee Rata.

Mr Rata was assaulted at a wedding on Bonnetts Road in Kaitaia on New Year's Eve and died in Whangarei Hospital the following day.

One man has already been charged with murder.

Police have arrested three other men and a woman - all members or associates of the Mongrel Mob - following searches at several properties in Moerewa yesterday.

They will appear in the Kaikohe District Court today on charges including murder, being a party to murder and conspiring to pervert the course of justice.

"We have been receiving great assistance from the public who have supplied information that has been crucial in achieving today's results," Detective Inspector Kevin Burke said.

"I believe that many reluctant witnesses who were in fear of reprisals from gang members will now have the confidence to come forward."
