Townsville Enterprise Ltd surveyed residents about the flight and tourism and events executive manager Bridget Woods said it had received an extremely positive response.

Ms Woods told Morning Report the city of about 200,000 people had the second-biggest New Zealand community in Queensland.

"We know that our city is home to many expat Kiwis.

"If there was a direct route there they would visit home more often and we would hope that their family and friends would come and visit them here in Townsville as well.

Airlines were looking for data on demand for the route and Townsville Enterprise was working to collect that.

Ms Woods said one of Townsville's main drawcards was its weather with about 320 days of sunshine each year.
