A family of five escaped unharmed from a blaze at a house in the Auckland suburb of Grey Lynn but a firefighter was injured.
The Fire Service was called about 12.45am to the Farrar Street property which has been gutted by the blaze.
A neighbour said the crackling of flames woke her, and her son went to fight the fire with a garden hose before the Fire Service arrived.
The fire officer was injured when stairs he was standing on collapsed. He was taken to Auckland City Hospital where he is under observation.
The fire is now out and one crew was still monitoring the site for hot spots.
