A search has failed to find a man who fled police near the Hutt River.
Police say an ambulance stopped the man about 5am today after he was seen driving erratically.
When the man was told police officers were on their way he fled, driving towards the Hutt River and leaving his car near there.
Police say he is not wanted for any specific offence but officers want to speak with him.
A search involving a helicopter and police dog around the Lower Hutt suburb of Avalon failed to find the man, and searchers have now been stood down.
