The bodies of two divers have been found after the men went missing off Great Barrier Island overnight.

Two helicopters were used to try to find the men after they disappeared just after midnight.

A bigger search and rescue operation was launched some hours later.

Police said the bodies of the two men were found by police divers this afternoon.

They are thought to be aged 31 and 55.

Police said they were with three others, going free diving for crayfish, on an eight metre boat that launched from Whangaparaoa.

One of the men failed to surface, and the other disappeared after going to investigate.

Next of kin are being told of the deaths and the men are still to be formally identified.
