A large scrub fire in Marlborough has been contained.

The fire broke out in steep countryside on the Vernon Station just south of Blenheim last night.

It's thought to have burnt through at least 25 hectares but no homes or farm buildings were threatened.

Marlborough Rural Fire Authority's principal officer, Richard McNamara said around three dozen fire-fighters, supported by four aircraft, worked to control the blaze.

He said a night crew will patrol the fire overnight.

Five helicopters and 35 firefighters returned to the scrub fire on Marlborough's dry east coast at daybreak.

The fire, which broke out in steep countryside on the Vernon Station just south of Blenheim last night, is thought to have burnt through at least 25 hectares.

One power line was brought down but no houses or farm buildings had been threatened.

A fire in Canterbury which destroyed a house, several sheds, and scorched hundreds of hectares of land in West Darfield was expected to continue burning for several days.

A fire near Hanmer Springs forced 28 people to leave their homes earlier in the week, and burnt through about 90 hectares and cut power to the north Canterbury town.
