A 73-year-old man who died after a tourist bus apparently backed into him in a carpark near Queenstown has been named as an American.

Police said Richard Philip Hyde, from Massachusetts, died in Queenstown Hospital.

The serious crash unit is investigating the accident, which took place at Mt Nicholas Station yesterday afternoon.

The tourism company, Southern Discoveries, has suspended its Queenstown operations.

Southern Discoveries chief executive Tim Hunter said staff were shocked and saddened.

He said the company had been in contact with the man's wife, who was not with him at the time.
