11:13 am on 18 April 2016

A fire on a fishing boat at Christchurch's Lyttelton Port is now contained.

The blaze was reported just before 8.15am on board the vessel which is moored in the port's inner harbour.

Six crew were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and four were taken to hospital as a precaution.

At its peak the fire was being fought crews from 13 fire engines.

A Fire Service spokesperson said it was thought the fire started as a result of maintenance being carried out on the boat.

A fire investigator will examine the scene today to establish the exact cause of the blaze.

Apart from Wharf 7, where the boat is moored, the port is operating as normal.
