3:32 pm on 21 April 2016

A young boy has died and another girl is seriously injured after a crash on the Hawke's Bay Expressway this morning.

The police said the nine-year-old boy was in the back seat of a car when it collided with a vehicle stopped at roadworks on the Pandora Bridge.

The boy died at the scene and his mother and five-year-old sister are both in a serious condition in Hawkes Bay Hospital.

The occupants of the other car - aged 11 months and 11, and their mother - were also taken to hospital with various injuries but are described as stable.

Both families were thought to be from Hawke's Bay.

The highway, between Prebensen Drive and Meeanee Quay, has re-opened and the Serious Crash Unit has completed its scene investigation.
