Two men have been arrested after two French tourists, who had been asleep in their car, were attacked and robbed in Northland.

The police said the men, one armed with a hammer, woke up the tourists and demanded money early on Sunday morning in the Totara St car park in Dargaville.

They said one tourist was punched in the face before the men stole cash and fled on foot.

The police said the tourists planned to continue their holiday.

Two men, aged 18 and 19, were expected to appear in the Whangarei District Court today on aggravated robbery and drugs charges.
