An operation is underway to assist the skipper of a 20m fishing boat that ran aground on an island off the Coromandel.
Waikato Regional Council said the vessel has ended up on Red Mercury Island, in the Mercury Islands chain, 30km off Whitianga.
The council's regional hazards team has been activated and said the crew is safe and the sea and weather conditions generally favourable.
There will be an attempt to re-float the grounded vessel at high tide about 11am.
The council said the boat appears intact and there was no sign of fuel having spilled into the sea.
