West Coast downpour comes to an end

7:42 pm on 20 May 2016

Heavy rain that was threatening to flood several houses on the West Coast has stopped, and floodwaters receded.

West Coast Civil Defence was on stand-by earlier this evening after heavy rain flooded garages and threatened to flood houses in Hokitika.

Civil Defence spokesperson Andy Thompson said the weather has calmed down dramatically and flood waters that were threatening 10 houses have receded.

The region recorded rainfall of up to 25 mm per hour and Metservice was warning there could also be thunderstorms.

Civil Defence was prepared in case people needed to be evacuated.

Mr Thompson, who is also a Westland District Councillor said the council was making significant upgrades to infrastructure in the area to help solve future flooding problems.
