A black labrador named Beau has been rescued by firefighters after spending five days stuck on the side of a South Canterbury cliff.

The Fire Service was called to the cliff on a rural property in the Esk Valley near St Andrews south of Timaru today, after people living nearby heard a dog barking.

Spokesman Kevin Donaldson said the pooch - who had been missing since Friday - had got himself stuck on a 25m high cliff.

He said it was unclear how the dog got where he did.

"Firefighter Rob Schiphorst was lowered down over the bank on a line - got access to the dog - who was very pleased to see him - and manufactured a harness or a sling out of some material he had and then both Rob and the dog were hauled up."

Mr Donaldson said the dog was in good spirits after the rescue and has now been reunited with his owner.
