A Northland man returning from a trip to South Africa has been caught with $2 million worth of methamphetamine in his luggage.

He was arrested at Auckland International Airport on Sunday night, after customs officials X-rayed his bag and found 2kg of the drug, also known as P, embedded in the lining.

Customs investigations manager Maurice O'Brien said the arrest was a joint trans-Tasman effort, involving Australia's Department of Immigration and the Australian Crime Commission.

A 60-year-old man appeared today in Manukau District Court, charged with importing a Class A drug.
