Another log truck crash in Northland this morning has brought the total to seven in seven weeks - three of them on a notorious road near Whangarei.

A fully-loaded log truck turning left out of Otaika Valley Road about 6.30am clipped a car coming from the right on Loop Road.

Northland's traffic chief Wayne Ewers said the truck driver was moving slowly and simply did not see the car, but it was very fortunate no-one was hurt.

Inspector Ewers said most of the seven recent crashes had been caused by driver inattention, or going too fast into corners.

He said the drivers were mostly experienced operators who had driven the same route many times, but the crash rate showed there was no room for complacency.

He said the truck driver in this morning's crash would be served with an infringement notice.

Meanwhile, Northland MP Winston Peters said the string of log-truck crashes proved the need for a balanced road-rail transport plan, and specialist driver training.
