Rise in number of burglaries in Christchurch

Updated at 6:15 am on 2 December 2008

Christchurch police have launched a campaign to curb a sharp rise in the number of burglaries.

Their figures show 771 burglaries were carried out in the city in September and October, compared with 558 over the same period last year.

Southern Area Commander Inspector Malcolm Johnston said police would be tackling the rise over the next three weeks.

He says homeowners should also be on the lookout for thieves targeting Christmas presents.

Mr Johnston says most presents are not insured and the impact of the theft can also be devastating.

He said people can help themselves by installing alarms and liaising with their neighbours about anyone who looks suspicious.
