Sir Bob drops Wellington election plans

Updated at 6:48 am on 17 August 2010

Wellington businessman Sir Robert Jones has dropped plans to back a mayoral candidate at the upcoming local elections.

Last year, Sir Robert and his group Vibrant Wellington announced they would contest the election, pushing for the so-called Golden Mile in the city centre to be pedestrian only.

He says now that the council has commissioned a study into the matter, there is no need to stand a candidate.

Four people have so far put their names forward for Wellington's mayoralty; the incumbent Kerry Prendergast, councillors Bryan Pepperell and Celia Wade-Brown, and businessman, Jack Yan.

Nominations and voter enrolments close on Friday.
