Police in Christchurch had to fire gas cannisters into a house on Saturday to flush out a man who had shot an arrow at an officer.

They were called to Harker Street on Saturday morning, where neighbours had reported that a man was walking up and down the street with a bow and arrow.

He shot at officers and retreated into a house but has now been arrested and remains in custody.
