Dogs to be allowed in central Wellington

8:25 pm on 8 October 2009

People will soon be allowed to bring their dogs into central Wellington.

The Wellington City Council on Thursday adopted a new policy which allows owners to walk their dogs on leashes through the town 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Previously, only dog owners living in the central city were allowed to walk their pets in town between 6pm and 8am.

Councillor Iona Pannett says the community has wildly divergent views on dogs and the council has to balance these views when making decisions.

The policy will come into effect by the end of the year.
