Water meters mooted in Wellington

Updated at 12:35pm on 15 October 2009

Wellington City Council says meters and new dams are part of the future if water consumption is not stablised in the capital.

Water shortages during recent summers led to the resolution as part of a draft water conservation plan.

Council members on Thursday accepted desperate measures may need to be taken if the capital's need for water does not slow.

Most say they don't want to see water metering occur.

Eight points in total were agreed. They include working in partnership with the Wellington Regional Council, Porirua City Council, Upper Hutt City Council and Hutt City Council on the water issue.

A targeted rate for funding water conservation measures such as rainwater tanks will also be explored.
