Mormon college closes doors for last time

Updated at 9:20 am on 4 December 2009

The country's only Mormon secondary school closes its doors for the last time on Friday.

Church College, at Templeview near Hamilton, opened in 1958.

The Latter Day Saints Church announced in 2006 that the school would close, and since then hasenrolled no new students.

The college's principal, Lloyd Keung, says the closure decision was made so resources could be used in more needy parts of the world.

He says the church also felt local schools were able to offer quality education for young Mormons.

A decision on the future of the school buildings will be made by the Church hierachy.
