Organisers of a new midwifery course on the West Coast are having to restrict the intake as there are not enough pregnant women volunteers.
The Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology says there has been huge interest in the course based at Greymouth, but the roll is being limited to four.
Midwifery lecturer Julie Richards says that number could increase if more pregnant women were available to work with the students.
Ms Richards believes the course is vital to a region which needs more midwives and hopes graduates will stay on the West Coast and help future students learn the job.
