About 40 volunteers, including divers, came together at Wellington's Evans Bay on Saturday to clean up the capital's harbour.
The initiative was part of Seaweek, aimed at raising awareness of the harm litter can cause in the marine environment.
Forest and Bird's conservation advocate, Kirstie Knowless, says careless disposal of rubbish on beaches can cause serious damage.
The volunteers will pass information about the type of rubbish found on to schools whose students are studying the effects of pollution on marine life.
