Fire which destroyed two caravans suspicious

Updated at 8:17 pm on 14 March 2010

The Fire Service is treating as suspicious a fire in Northland which destroyed two caravans on Sunday afternoon.

Mangawhai's chief fire officer, Maurice Doughty, says 25 to 30 firefighters fought the fire for three hours.

He says the fire started on a lifestyle block and came within 100 metres of a house.

Mr Doughty says witnesses reported seeing a vehicle leaving the area at high speed as the fire took hold.

The incident has been reported to the police.
