Group to promote Auckland during Volvo race stop

The Government is planning to set up an economic development group to make the most of promoting Auckland's marine industry during the Volvo Ocean Race stop-off.

Auckland has been named as a stage on next year's round-the-world yacht race. Most boats are likely to spend 10 days there.

At each stop, teams usually undertake overhauls or repairs on their boats.

Pakuranga MP Maurice Williamson says the Government plans to set up a cluster group of people from all aspects of the marine industry as well as tourism and marketing experts.

Mr Williamson says that is part of a continuing push to promote Auckland's marine industry internationally.

The economic benefits should outlast the race itself, he says.
