Updated at 5:20 pm on 11 May 2010

Police in Tauranga are investigating an alleged abduction of a schoolgirl.

The alleged incident happened in the Baycroft Avenue area of Merivale about 8am on Tuesday.

Police say the schoolgirl reported that she was abducted by a couple in a vehicle and was driven to the Countdown Supermarket at Greerton Village.

She was able to escape when the couple parked there.

The man is described as a large Polynesian, dressed in black with facial tattoos. He was accompanied by a slightly built female, also dressed in black.

The school girl was unharmed but police are appealing for sightings of the pair or witnesses to the incident.
