Police in Whangarei say they are disappointed by the number of cars being stopped carrying unrestrained children.

A police operation this week found nine unrestrained children, all aged eight years and under.

Officers also found 47 car seats that needed adjustments and issued almost 70 infringement notices.

The checkpoints were carried out around the suburbs of Otangarei, Tikipunga and Raumanga and will be repeated.
