Two drunken women with children in their cars have been arrested in separate incidents in Tauranga.

One had a 10 year old boy as her passenger; the other a four year old girl.

The first woman, aged 49, from Papamoa, was caught in the central city at midnight on Friday with 1030mg of alcohol per litre of breath. The limit is 400mg per litre.

The second, aaged 36 from Mt Maunganui, was stopped at a harbour bridge checkpoint at about 10.20pm on Saturday with 560mg per litre.

An hour later, a man, aged 21, was caught by a police dog unit after he abandoned a car on the Tauranga side of the bridge.

Sergeant Dan Roser says he's dismayed parents would put their children at such risk.
