Updated at 10:01 pm on 9 September 2010

A second earthquake has struck Hawke's Bay.

At 8.25pm on Thursday, a quake measuring 4.3 on the Richter scale hit, centred about 40 kilometres southeast of Waipukerau, close to where a 5.3 earthquake struck earlier in the afternoon.

The earthquakes were close to where another earthquake occurred on Tuesday morning.

The first earthquake startled residents in the coastal community of Porangahau.
