Waitara fashion label looks to high end for future

A Maori fashion label based in Waitara that started by selling tee shirts and hoodies four years ago is making the leap from streetware to haute couture.

Keri Wanoa and her husband Hemi Sundgren from Whiri presented their He Kahukura collection at the New Zealand fashion awards last week.

Ms Wanoa told Waatea News that a lot of their items are hand made - not mass production. She says the future for the label is the high end of the market.

Ms Wanoa says showing at New Zealand's premier fashion event is a great way for Maori designers to improve their brand recognition.
