Chopper search area narrowed by sightings

The Rescue Co-ordination Centre says sightings have helped narrow the search area for a missing helicopter in Southland.

The Robinson 22 chopper, which was on a training flight in the Awarua area, was reported overdue at 2pm on Thursday.

An instructor and a trainee pilot were on board.

Three helicopters searched more than 1000 square km east of Bluff on Thursday night and the search resumed on Friday morning.

The rescue centre says sightings have helped narrow the search area significantly.

But it says there's still a lot of terrain to cover, including swamps and forested areas.
