Gang patch ban lawful, council tells court

Wanganui District Council says its by-law banning gang patches complies with the law and should not be struck out.

The display of gang insignia is banned in all urban areas of the city and some rural halls to prevent gang confrontation and intimidation of the public.

The Hells Angels gang says legislation requires such a by-law to pinpoint a specific place but the council's ban encompasses the whole city and beyond and should therefore be revoked.

However, the council's lawyer, Hayden Wilson, has told a judicial review in the High Court at Wanganui that the ban does not cover the entire district and is therefore lawful and should remain.
