Auckland Council to help repair derelict building

6:44 pm on 1 December 2010

The Auckland Council is to help restore a derelict downtown building which locals describe as an eyesore.

The 100-year-old heritage building on Albert Street has been empty for more than 15 years and is covered in graffiti and has broken windows.

Mayor Len Brown says the five-storey building is disgusting but the council can not legally force the owner to maintain it, so has come to an agreement whereby both parties will pay for it to be cleaned up.

Mr Brown will not say how much that will cost ratepayers, but believes it is well worth the money and work will start right away.
