Two dead after car plunges into Whanganui River

A woman and toddler are dead after the car they were in plunged into the Whanganui River.

Five people were in the car which was travelling along Anzac Parade when it left the road near the Kiwi Street intersection and went into the river at 1.25pm on Sunday.

Three managed to escape from the submerged vehicle and swam to shore.

Emergency services recovered the body of a woman passenger, 38, from the car.

At about 7.15pm the car was recovered from the river and about an hour later the body of the missing child was found nearby.
