Police have revealed more details of a Gisborne shooting incident in which a man was wounded, a liquor store robbed and a car was stolen.
They say a 29-year-old man was shot in the face with a .22 calibre rifle in a house in the suburb of Elgin at about 3.30pm on Sunday. He is in a stable condition in Waikato Hospital.
Soon after, a nearby liquor store was robbed of cash by a man who then approached a woman in a car and stole the vehicle.
Police say the Armed Offenders Squad stopped a vehicle on State Highway 2 at Otoko, west of Gisborne, 90 minutes later.
A man, 33, was arrested for assault, though more serious charges are expected. He is under guard at Gisborne Hospital with a hand injury.
Police say they are trying to work out what sparked the incident but it's not gang-related.
