Christchurch struggles to cope with summer water demand

11:39 am on 8 January 2011

Christchurch City Council is closely monitoring water use over the weekend to determine whether it needs to impose water restrictions.

The council says the city's water infrastructure was badly damaged by the Canterbury earthquake and cannot cope with peak summer demand.

More than half the wells in Christchurch were damaged; 10% of them beyond repair.

A spokesperson for the council says people need to use 10% less water to avoid restrictions.
