An investigation has begun into a helicopter crash in Bream Bay in Northland.

The pilot, 43, was rescued from the sea. He has been released from Whangarei hospital after being treated for bumps, bruises and hypothermia on Thursday afternoon.

Witnesses reported seeing the helicopter flying low above them, then heard a loud bang and saw a big splash in Bream Bay.

The Transport Accident Investigation Commission says the pilot has been interviewed and it is looking to recover the aircraft.

It says the wreckage is about 2km off the coast.
