Child killer breaches condition of release

The killer of a Hawke's Bay boy has been reprimanded for breaching the conditions of his prison release.

Benny Haerewa was freed from jail just before Christmas after completing his full 12-year prison sentence for the manslaughter of four-year-old James Whakaruru.

At the time, the Parole Board expressed grave fears about Haerewa's likelihood of reoffending.

The Probation Service will not say which of 11 special release conditions have been broken.

General manager Katrina Casey says Haerewa could be taken to court if he breaches the rules again. However, the agency is no longer paying daily visits to him.
