Brawling Tauranga gang members charged

5:05 pm on 6 February 2011

Twenty-five members of two rival gangs have been arrested and charged with unlawful assembly following two brawls in Tauranga on Saturday.

Those arrested have been separated. One gang has been taken to police holding cells in Rotorua and the other is being kept in Tauranga.

Police area commander for western Bay of Plenty, Mike Clement, says the arrests were made following the second fight in Tauranga, thought to have started in retaliation for an earlier altercation in Mount Maunganui.

Mr Clement says the police arrived at the scene after the brawl had broken up, at about 3pm on Saturday and arrested 13 members from one gang.

He says 12 members of the other gang were arrested later, after police executed a search warrant on a Tauranga property.

Radio New Zealand understands the gangs involved are the Filthy Few and the Greasy Dogs.

All 25 will appear in the Tauranga District Court on Monday.
