The Wellington City Council is considering bids from seven internet providers for free wifi in the central business district in what would be a first for a New Zealand city.
Wifi went live on the city's waterfront in January this year.
Wellington mayor Celia Wade-Brown says free wifi is a priority, but will not commit to it till she knows how much bidders are asking for.
Details of the bids are commercially confidential and a decision will be made by the end of June, she says.
