Auckland MP investigates Sydney-style Mardi Gras

9:01 pm on 9 February 2011

The MP for Auckland Central is pushing for Auckland to host a Mardi Gras parade like the one held by Sydney's gay community.

Nikki Kaye has written to Auckland Council's tourism body and the mayor seeking support for a feasibility study.

Ms Kaye also wants to contact organisers of Sydney's Mardi Gras and Australian politicians.

Auckland used to host the controversial Hero Parade each year but that event ended in 2001 after financial problems.

Ms Kaye says a Sydney-style Mardi Gras would celebrate the local community while giving an economic boost to Auckland.

She believes there would be substantial support from both the gay community and the wider public.
