Quakes in northern South Island

An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.9 shook parts of the east coast of the South Island on Sunday evening.

The quake, which was recorded at 4.43pm, was located 20-kilometres east of Kaikoura at a depth of 12km.

GNS Science says the quake was widely felt on the South Island's east coast.

Police say there have been no reports of damage, but rocks fell onto State Highway One about 17km north of Kaikoura near the Irongate bridge. The rocks have since been cleared.

Another quake, of 4.1 magnitude, was recorded at 11.02pm at a depth of 12km. The tremor was centred 10km south-east of Blenheim.

Some smaller but shallow tremors hit in Canterbury through the night, including a 3.3 quake at a depth of 4km which struck at 2.19am, and was centred 10km west of Lyttelton.
