A mini tornado has ripped part of the roof off a building in south Auckland, temporarily trapping a worker.

The Fire Service was called shortly after 2.30pm on Tuesday to a storage facility on Puhinui Road in the suburb of Papatoetoe.

The tornado ripped off a section of roof measuring 40 metres by 20 metres.

Fire officer George Lewis says crews removed debris and freed a man who was not hurt in the incident.

Fire officers say the tornado appeared to be highly localised and have not had any other reports of damage.
