5:10 pm on 22 April 2011

Surf Life Saving says a fisherman who died at an Auckland beach was not wearing a life jacket.

The man, aged his 50s, was fishing with a group off rocks at Bethells Beach about 11am on Friday when he was swept into the sea.

The president of Bethels Beach Surf Lifesaving Patrol says the man was not able to make it back to the rocks.

Dave Comp says the man was washed back to shore and picked up by the lifeguards who administered CPR before paramedics arrived. However, they could not resuscitate him.

Police are trying to identify the man.
