Election underway to replace sacked school board

An Auckland school which had its last board sacked has been allowed to hold new elections.

A commissioner has been at Sir Edmund Hillary Collegiate in Otara since Education Minister Ann Tolley sacked the old board in 2009 after an Education Office reports raised concerns about student safety.

However, a board is now allowed to again control the school.

The election to replace commissioner Gail Thomson is underway and ends on 9 June.

Ms Thomson says there have been positive improvements at the site's three schools and parents are keen to take responsibility again.

She says some members from the ousted board have been nominated for the replacement board of trustees.

The new board will include six parents and a member appointed by the Education Ministry.
