Operations centre set up to monitor rugby traffic

9:32 pm on 2 June 2011

A Major Events Operation Centre has been set up in Auckland to monitor people and traffic heading to Rugby World Cup events.

A 125cm screen will show images from cameras installed at key roads, stadiums and bus and train stations.

Police, ambulance, liquor licensing and traffic management staff will work from the centre and share information with colleagues at the events.

The Minister for the Rugby World Cup, Steven Joyce, and the Minister of Transport, Steven Joyce, attended a briefing at the centre on Thursday.

The traffic systems manager for Auckland Transport, Ken Lee-Jones, says the cameras will help staff resolve any problems, such as traffic queues or disorderly behaviour.

He says the centre's first real test will be during the Bledisloe Cup game next month.
